Original 1950s 45s from my collection

montage2

20 rare near mint condition 1950s UK pressing 7 inch vinyl records:

This is a collection of 20 vintage original 1950s United Kingdom pressing vinyl 45 records which are in exceptional condition. These records are a careful selection of music releases by some of the most significant artists of the era especially including the early pioneers of rock and roll, rockabilly, doo wop and soul music.
Please note – although these original records are rare and valuable even in lower grade condition, almost all the items within this set are in exceptionally high condition. In many cases the items in this set are the best condition examples of these original music releases anyone is ever likely to find anywhere worldwide in 2013 and onwards. These items have been graded to an extremely strict and professional criteria under strong light which is outlined in detail here. My EX grade is possibly the same as a MINT grade by Korean record dealers.

Record 1.    BILL HALEY And His Comets (We’re Gonna) Rock Around The Clock/Thirteen Women (UK) Brunswick 05317 (January 1955 – First pressing (silver label text) without “MGM Blackboard Jungle” Credit – Landmark record. Bill Haley made his first record in 1948 as a Country & Western artist. By the time he recorded “Rock Around The Clock” in April 1954 he’d already had more than twenty different 78s and 45s released on small independent labels, including cover versions of R&B hits “Rocket 88” (Jackie Brenston/Ike Turner) and “Rock The Joint” (Jimmy Preston). Haley’s Decca records were produced by Milt Gabler, who had also produced R&B star Louis Jordan’s Decca hits a few years before and in many ways Jordan’s upbeat R&B sound was a template for Haley’s own rock & roll style.)
(Grade/Condition: normal grade under normal light: EX+ to NEAR MINT, extremely strict grade 20 cm directly under 100 watt hallogen lamp light: around EX . This single is in very nice condition with only extremely light cross-scuffing from the paper sleeve and possibly the cleaning process. These scuffs only show up under strong light and it is unlikely there would be many copies of this original record in existence in better condition than this one. Labels are very clean (M-) with no defects at all except for the lightest of wear. Record comes in a reproduction sleeve which is MINT. Plays at least EX+ [listen below].)

Brief biography: Bill Haley & His Comets were an American rock and roll band that was founded in 1952 and continued until Haley’s death in 1981. They were the earliest group of white musicians to bring rock and roll to the attention of white America and the rest of the world. In 1954 Haley and His Comets recorded “Rock Around the Clock”, Haley’s biggest hit, and one of the most important records in rock and roll history.

This record was not released in a picture sleeve and comes in its original 1955 generic HMV EP sleeve which is VG. The sleeve is very clean but has some splits to the side and a small tear around the label hole area on one side. Very nice condition over-all)

Brief biography: Marilyn Monroe (June 1, 1926 – August 5, 1962) was an iconic American actress, model, and singer, who became a major sex symbol, starring in a number of commercially successful motion pictures during the 1950s and early 1960s. The final years of Monroe’s life were marked by illness, personal problems, and a reputation for unreliability and being difficult to work with. The circumstances of her death in 1962, from an overdose of barbiturates, have been the subject of conjecture. Though officially classified as a “probable suicide”, the possibility of an accidental overdose, as well as of homicide, have not been ruled out. In 1999, Monroe was ranked as the sixth-greatest female star of all time by the American Film Institute.

Record 3.    ELVIS PRESLEY(엘비스 프레슬리) Heartbreak Hotel/I Was The One (UK) His Master’s Voice 7M 385 (March 1956 – Arguably one of the most important records ever made. Elvis had already established himself in America as an upcoming star with his five superb rockabilly singles on Sun, all of which were reissued by RCA-Victor in December 1955, but this was his first “new” record with RCA and it was Elvis’’ introduction to the rest of the world. A lot of people [including executives at RCA] didn’t know what to make of this “alien” sound an echoey blues/country hybrid that made no sense to conservative audiences. However it eventually took off and became a massive worldwide hit, the second record [after Carl Perkins’ “Blue Suede Shoes”] to top all three Billboard charts and the biggest selling record of 1956. Songwriter Mae Axton [who part-wrote “Heartbreak Hotel”] had been instrumental in introducing Elvis to Colonel Tom Parker and securing his RCA contract with Steve Sholes in Nashville. “Heartbreak Hotel” was recorded in Nashville on Jan 10 1956 and was released in America as an RCA-Victor single on Jan 27. Elvis was backed by his regular band: Scotty Moore guitar, Bill Black bass, and D.J. Fontana drums, supplemented by session players Chet Atkins on rhythm guitar and Floyd Cramer on piano. The session was produced by Steve Sholes and Chet Atkins. Note this British HMV copy is a very first pressing with the American “Tree Publishing” on the label [later U.K. pressings had “Frank Music/B.F. Wood].  Note too that any British pressing of HMV 7M 385 are much rarer than the HMV POP 182 issue on 78. 45s were still a new concept in Britain in 1956 and 78s sold in much larger numbers.)
(Grade/Condition: normal grade under normal light: EX+ to NEAR MINTextremely strict grade 20 cm directly under 100 watt hallogen lamp light: EX to EX+This single is in exceptionally high condition with only extremely light cross-scuffing from the paper sleeve and possibly the cleaning process. The picture of the record below shows the nature of the very minor scuffs, there are no scratches only light cross scuffs. These scuffs only show up significantly under strong light and it is unlikely there would be many copies of this original record in existence in better condition than this one. Labels are very clean (EX+) however the centre is missing due to someone pushing it out to play the record on a US style large hole player rather than a British small hole one. This centre can be replaced with an artifical centre such as the yellow one below. Record comes in a reproduction sleeve which is MINT. Plays at least EX+ [listen below].)

Record 4.   CARL PERKINS Blue Suede Shoes/Honey Don’t (UK) London HLU 8271 (April 1956 – His third record, recorded on December 19 1955 for Sam Phillips’ Sun label in Memphis and released in America as Sun 234 in January 1956. Two absolutely classic rockabilly tracks and his only big hit – it topped the Cashbox and Billboard C&W, pop, and R&B charts, the first rockabilly record to sell in all three markets – this one record making rockabilly universally accepted. This U.K. tri-centre London release dates from April 1956. Unfortunately Perkins was sidelined by a bad road accident and never managed to capitalise on any of his excellent follow-up records. His original version of “Blue Suede Shoes” was eventually eclipsed by Elvis’s version.)
(Grade/Condition: normal grade under normal light: around EX+ extremely strict grade 20 cm directly under 100 watt hallogen lamp light: (EX- to) EXThis single is in high condition with only very light cross-scuffing from the paper sleeve and one very small light scratch on side B. The labels are exceptionally nice and clean (M-). Record comes in its original sleeve which is around VG+ and is is nice condition except for the number and writing on it as seen in the scan below. I reason that this original sleeve and record have been together for almost 60 years, so I see no reason to replace the sleeve now. This record is actually the most valuble record of all the records listed here and rarely turns up in condition as nice as this one is. This record in this condition only turns up for sale every few years,  and the most recent really clean listing of this record was in 2005 when the record listed sold for 300 UK Pounds)

Record 5.   GENE VINCENT Be-Bop-A-Lula/Woman Love (UK) Capitol CL 14599 (June 1956 – Another landmark rock & roll record. Capitol was looking for an answer to Elvis and came up with Gene Vincent & His Blue Caps. Gene and his band (featuring guitarist Cliff Gallup) were the real thing, a genuine rock & roll band who had the right look and sound for the time. Both tracks recorded inNashville in May 1956 and released in America in June as Capitol F3450. Like Carl Perkins’ “Blue Suede Shoes” it went top ten on pop, R&B and C&W charts, and like Perkins, it was his only significant hit. Vincent had a loyal following in the U.K. and Europe for many years and he lived in England at various times.)
(Grade/Condition: normal grade under normal light: around MINT MINUS extremely strict grade 20 cm directly under 100 watt hallogen lamp light: EX+ (to NEAR MINT)This single is in exceptionally high condition with only ultra light odd scuffs from paper sleeve here and there. The labels are generally clean (EX-) except for the number 14 writen on one side and a small tear which has been carefully repaired [click on label scan below for larger pic of label]. Record comes in a reproduction sleeve (M-). Most original 1950s Gene Vincent records that come up for sale are in poor condition but they still sell for decent prices however this record is in quite amazing condition and is by far the cleanest original Gene Vincent record I’ve ever seen. Plays at least EX+ [listen below].)

Brief biography: Gene Vincent, was an American musician who pioneered the styles of rock and roll and rockabilly. His 1956 top ten hit with his Blue Caps, “Be-Bop-A-Lula”, is considered a significant early example of rockabilly.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1952 as a 17 year old and completed a Korean War deployment. In July 1955, while in Norfolk, a motorcycle shattered his left leg. He refused to have it amputated.
The leg was saved, but left him with a limp and pain. He wore a steel sheath around the remains for the rest of his life. On 16 April 1960, while on tour in the UK Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran were involved in a high-speed traffic accident. Vincent broke his ribs and collarbone and further damaged his weakened leg. Cochran, who had been thrown from the vehicle, suffered serious brain injuries and died the next day.
Gene Vincent died on October 12, 1971 but his legacy remains as one of the earliest pioneers of rock and roll music.

Record 6.     FATS DOMINO Blueberry Hill/I Can’t Go On (UK) London HLU 8330 (October 1956 “Blueberry Hill” was Fats Domino’s 30thU.S. single (on Imperial) and his 7th release on the U.K. London label, although with a different flipside to the American issue. It was his biggest hit, supposedly selling five million copies worldwide during 1956 and 1957. Unlike almost all his other Imperial records, “Blueberry Hill” was recorded in Los Angeles, rather than New Orleans, in July 1956. “I Can’t Go On’ is from an October 1955 New Orleans session. British Decca kept this London issue in catalogue well into the 1960s but this original 1956 tri-centre pressing is now hard to find, particularly in fine condition, as most copies sold in Britain at the time were 78s.)

Record 7.    FRANKIE LYMON and the TEENAGERS I’m Not A Juvenile Delinquent/ Baby, Baby (UK) Columbia DB 3878 (February 1957 – In October 1956 [Lymon had just turned 14 and The Teenagers were one of the hottest groups in America with several U.S. hits under their belts] the group recorded “I’m Not A Juvenile Delinquent” and “Baby, Baby” in New York, supervised by George Goldner and arranged by Jimmy Wright who played tenor sax on all of the Teenagers’ sessions. These songs were recorded specifically for inclusion in Alan Freed’s up-coming movie “Rock Rock Rock” and Freed gave both sides heavy airplay on his New York radio show. The record was released on Goldner’s Gee label in November 1956. Surprisingly the record was not an American hit but this U.K. Columbia issue from February 1957 went to the top of the British charts. The Teenagers had enjoyed 18 months of phenomenal success and then it was over. Lymon had something of a solo career but no real hits. In June 1957 Goldner sold his Gee, Rama and Roulette labels to Morris Levy [coincidently Alan Freed’s manager]. Levy thereafter controlled copyrights of all the Teenagers’ hits, including himself as composer and receiving all future royalties. Note this British Columbia 45 is not common as most U.K. sales at the time would have been 78s.)
(Grade/Condition: normal grade under normal light: VG+ to EX-extremely strict grade 20 cm directly under 100 watt hallogen lamp light: VGThis single has quite a lot of light marks to both sides but is still in quite reasonable presentable condition for a 1957 original pressing. Labels are very nice and clean (EX+) with no defects at all except for the lightest of wear. Record comes in a clean original sleeve which is around EX but has a number written in pencil in one corner. Some UK record sellers would call this item EX but under strong lamp light these light marks show up clearly. This plays with some light background noise here and there on my system and I decided to make an exception to my policy of only listing records in very high grades in this set, because I thought it essential to include a Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers record and also this record does not turn up often in any condition.)

Frankie_Lymon

Brief biography: Frankie Lymon was born in Harlem, New York and joined the Doo Wop group The Teenagers in 1955 when he was 13 years old. In 1956 Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers had two big hits; Why do Fools Fall in Love and I’m Not A Juvenile Delinquent. Lymon was addicted to heroin from the age of 15 and died of a drug overdose in 1968 aged 25.

Record 8.   FATS DOMINO I’m Walkin’/ I’m In The Mood For Love (UK) London HLP 8407 (April 1957 – This was Fats’ 32ndU.S. Imperial single and his tenth on British London. Both sides were recorded at Cosimo’s Studio in New Orleans in early January 1957 and released in America on Imperial in February. “I’m Walkin” is classic uptempo R&B/rock & roll and was another worldwide hit. Musicians on this one included tenor sax men Lee Allen (who played on most of Little Richard’s Specialty records) and Herb Hardesty, with in-demand drummer Earl Palmer who re-located to Los Angeles that same year and eventually played on countless West Coast sessions including Eddie Cochran’s “Summertime Blues” (also on this list).)

Record 10.    The CRICKETS (with BUDDY HOLLY) That’ll Be The Day/I’m Lookin’ For Someone To Love (UK) Coral Q 72279 (September 1957 –  Buddy Holly had already recorded for Decca inNashville and had two singles released in 1956 with little success. An earlier version of “That’ll Be The Day”, recorded by Holly in 1956 before his time with the Crickets, was released by Decca in August 1957 and must have created confusion at the time. After leaving Decca, Holly’s records were produced by Norman Petty in Clovis, New Mexico with his new group The Crickets – Buddy Holly (vocal and lead guitar), Niki Sullivan (rhythm guitar), Joe Mauldin (bass) and Jerry Allison (drums). Petty added to the confusion by releasing some tracks as by the Crickets on Brunswick and others as by Buddy Holly on Coral (Brunswick and Coral both being subsidiaries of Decca!). Things were further complicated in the U.K. where everything came out on Coral except Holly’s earlier Decca tracks which were released in the U.K. on Brunswick. Anyway this version of “That’ll Be The Day” was a major worldwide hit, released in the U.S. (on Brunswick) in June 1957 and in the U.K. in September, actually on Vogue Coral Q 72279. This copy is a second pressing from late 1957 or early 1958 when Vogue-Coral had become just Coral in the U.K. Note Buddy Holly is not mentioned on the labels except as one of the songwriters.)

Record 11. EVERLY BROTHERS Wake Up Little Susie/Maybe Tomorrow (UK) London HLA 8498 (October 1957 – – Don and Phil Everly had had many years experience singing on their father’s country radio show before making their first record for Columbia in 1956. They were championed by Chet Atkins and were eventually signed to Archie Bleyer’s Cadence label where they had a huge worldwide hit with “Bye Bye Love”. “Wake Up Little Susie” was the follow-up and again was an international hit. Both songs were written by Nashville songwriting team Felice & Bordleaux Bryant who went on to write other hit songs for the Everlys. It was released on Cadence in America in September 1957 and this U.K. London issue came out in October. The Everly Brothers with their close vocal harmonies were directly influenced by established country acts like the Delmore Brothers and the Louvin Brothers, but updated their sound to appeal to a teenage rock & roll audience. They in turn influenced later acts like Simon & Garfunkel.)

Record 11.   LITTLE RICHARD With His Band (리틀 리처드) Keep A Knockin’/Can’t Believe You Wanna Leave (UK) London HLO 8509 (November 1957 – Richard was arguably the wildest of the ’50s rock & rollers and this was one of his most exciting singles, a break-neck rocker featuring extended Clifford Burks sax breaks. This one was recorded in WashingtonDC in January 1957 with Richard’s tour band The Upsetters and was supposedly a one minute take extended by splicing to make it of acceptable length for release on a single. Don Covay’s first record (as Pretty Boy) was also recorded at this session with Richard on piano. Flip is a thumping New Orleans “ballad” recorded in July 1956 with a great Lee Allen sax break. First released in the U.S. in September 1957 as Specialty 611.)
(Grade/Condition: normal grade under normal light: EX- (to EX)extremely strict grade 20 cm directly under 100 watt hallogen lamp light: (VG+ to) EX-. This single is still in nice condition despite the EX- grade. It has no actual scratches on it, only light cross scuffing under strong light, it also has been played quite a few times. Some spindle marks indicate it has been played carefully [mostly just the A side] but labels are very clean (M-) with no defects at all. Record comes in a reproduction sleeve which is MINT. Plays at least EX+ [listen below].)

little-richard

Brief biography: Richard Penniman (born December 5, 1932), was known by his stage name Little Richard. He is an American pianist, singer and songwriter, and one of the early pioneers of rock and roll music. He reshaped popular music during the mid to late 1950s with a series of fast paced rock and roll hits, and his wild performance persona. He worked with and influenced many of the most significant music artists of the 1960s and 1970s, including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Elton John, Freddie Mercury and others.
Little Richard is one of the most important figures in rock and roll history.  In 2013 he is 80 years old and lives in a small city in Tennessee, in the United States.

Record 12.     SAM COOKE You Send Me/Summertime (UK) London HLU 8506 (November 1957 – Sam Cooke is often cited as one of the three major influences on other male singers in R&B and soul music (the other two being Ray Charles and Clyde McPhatter). He was hugely popular on the gospel circuit throughout the early to mid ‘50s as lead singer of The Soul Stirrers on Specialty Records, but when he turned to secular music in 1956 he preferred to sing pop rather than R&B, resulting in a fall-out with Specialty label boss Art Rupe. Cooke and producer Bumps Blackwell (who had produced most of Little Richard’s Specialty hits) left Specialty for  Bob Keene’s Keen label who released “You Send Me” and “Summertime” as Keen 3-4013 in August 1957.)
(Grade/Condition: normal grade under normal light: MINTextremely strict grade 20 cm directly under 100 watt hallogen lamp light: MINT (possibly M-, but it is genuinely M- to M at least)This single is in exceptionally nice condition with absolutely no defects or even light scuffs under strong light. No spindle marks indicating that it is probably unplayed, except for once during the recording below. The labels are very clean (MINT) with no defects at all. Record comes in a reproduction sleeve which is MINT. This 1957 record is extremely rare in this condition. Probably on a handfull of original pressings of this record exist worldwide in this kind of condition.)

Record 13.    JERRY LEE LEWIS Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On/ It’ll Be Me (UK) London HLS 8457   (December 1957 – This was Jerry Lee’s third single and a massive hit, selling five million copies worldwide. Song was written by black composers Otis Blackwell and Jack Hammer and  recorded by Lewis in Memphis in October 1957. Amazingly, there are only two musicians on this recording, Lewis with his pounding piano and James Van Eaton on drums. Lewis was 22 years old at the time. “Great Balls Of Fire” was issued in America on Sun in November 1957 and this British release on London came out in December. Lewis was a totally unique artist with an instantly recognisable piano style, although he had probably been influenced by 1940s pianists like country artist Moon Mullican and R&B artist Amos Milburn.)

Brief biography: Jerry Lee Lewis (born September 29, 1935) is an American rock and roll and country music singer-songwriter and pianist. An early pioneer of rock and roll music, Lewis had hits in the late 1950s with songs such as “Great Balls of Fire” and “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On”,
As part of his stage act, Lewis would often kick the piano bench aside and play standing. Lewis’ career declined dramatically in 1958 when it was revealed he had married his second-removed cousin who was only 13 years old at the time. He was first married when he was 14 years old, and has been married 7 times in total.
As of December 2012 he is 77 years old and lives in Mississippi in the United States.

Record 14.    CHUCK BERRY (척 베리) Johnny B. Goode/Around And Around (UK) London HLM 8629 (May 1958 – Classic Chess rockers recorded in Chicago in February 1958. Chuck was backed on this one by Chess house musicians Lafayette Leake (piano), Willie Dixon (bass) and Fred Below (drums). Note ’50s British London pressings deserve their reputation – the Decca engineers understood R&B and rock & roll and U.K. pressings always play loud, unlike Australian pressings of the time – Chuck Berry singles on Aussie Philips microgroove  sound lightweight comparatively.)
(Grade/Condition: normal grade under normal light: NEAR MINTextremely strict grade 20 cm directly under 100 watt hallogen lamp light: EXThis single is in very nice condition with only odd scuffs scuffs under strong light. A conservative EX grade and close to EX+. Some spindle marks indicate it has been played carefully but labels are very clean (M-) with no defects at all. Record comes in an original sleeve which is EX except for the number 8 written on both sides of the sleeve. This 1958 record is rare in this condition.)

Record 15.    The COASTERS Yakety Yak/Zing! Went The Strings Of My Heart (UK) London HLE 8665 (July 1958 – Recorded in New York in March 1958, great Leiber & Stoller produced rock and roll featuring the classic Coasters line-up of Carl Gardner, Cornell Gunter, Billy Guy and Will “Dub” Jones with a distinctive King Curtis sax break. Flip is a terrific R&B ballad featuring Dub Jones’ bass voice as lead vocalist (Jones had featured two years earlier as the lead on The Cadets’ “Stranded In The Jungle” hit). “Yakety Yak” was first issued in the U.S. in May 1958 as Atco 6116.)

Record 16.     EDDIE COCHRAN Summertime Blues/Love Again (UK) London HLU 8702 (September 1958 – Absolutely classic rock & roll record, song revived by everybody from the Who to Brian Setzer of Stray Cats, but this original version is still the best! Cochran was actually a fabulous rock guitarist and was already an in-demand session musician by the time of his death. Backing musicians on this one were Guybo Smith (bass) and veteran New Orleans R&B drummer Earl Palmer (who also played drums on Little Richard’s “Can’t Believe You Wanna Leave” and Fats Domino’s “I’m Walkin’”, both on this list!) “Love Again” on the flip was written by Cochran’s girlfriend Sharon Sheeley who was with him and Gene Vincent in the car crash that killed Cochran. First released in America as Liberty 55144 in June 1958.  Note that British London American pressings are still regarded as the best of their time.)
(Grade/Condition: normal grade under normal light: EX- to EXextremely strict grade 20 cm directly under 100 watt hallogen lamp light: EX- (to EX). This single is in very nice condition with only very light odd scuffs  and a few extremely light scratches under strong light. Record 17.    CLYDE McPHATTER A Lover’s Question/I Can’t Stand Up Alone (UK) London HLE 8755 (November 1958 – Hugely influential artist in ‘50s and ‘60s R&B and soul music, McPhatter’s high tenor influenced numerous other singers from Dee Clark to Smokey Robinson. Originally the lead singer with the very successful Dominoes in the early ‘50s (replaced by Jackie Wilson), and then lead with the equally successful Drifters on Atlantic Records. This was his 12th Atlantic solo single after leaving the Drifters in 1955. “A Lover’s Question”, part-written by Brook Benton (who provides background finger-snapping on this record), was his biggest solo hit, recorded in New York in August 1958. It was released in America as Atlantic 1199 in September 1958.)

Record 18.     EDDIE COCHRAN C’mon Everybody/Don’t Ever Let Me Go (UK) London HLU 8792 (Janurary 1959 – another iconic rocker, this was Eddie’s 8th Liberty single and his second worldwide smash, following immediately after “Summertime Blues”. This was recorded in Los Angeles on October 10 1958 and released in America by Liberty that same month. It was released in the U.K. in January 1959 on theLondon label. Musicians on the session were Eddie Cochran vocal and guitar, Connie “Guybo” Smith bass, Ray Johnson piano and Earl Palmer drums. It is interesting to note that although music was still generally segregated regarding radio play and concerts throughout much of America, race didn’t seem to matter in the studio – Cochran and Smith were white, Johnson (brother of prolific sax session man Plas Johnson) and Palmer black.)

Flip is a great track from the March 1958 “Yakety Yak” session, another brilliant slice-of-life offering about three down at heel street “cats” trying to pick up “three cool chicks”. Curtis blows another brilliant solo on this one. Released in America in January 1959 on Atco 6132.)

Additional Details:

Why UK pressings?:

This is a very important consideration. I made a deliberate decision to concentrate on Made in England (UK) pressings rather than Made in USA pressing for a number of key reasons. The first reason is that late 1950s UK pressing are renowned as the the highest quality pressings of of the era, and are regarded by worldwide collectors as being of superior quality in much the same way as 1950s UK HMV classical LPs and 1950s/60s US Blue Note label modern jazz LPs are highly regarded. Unlike most US pressings and most modern post 1960 pressings, many UK labels such as the London label employed the use of deep/wide playing grooves that enhanced the ‘deepness’ of the sound quality.

Made in England records from 1950s are highest quality with best sound quality.

( 1950년대 영국에서 제작된 레코드는 최상의 음향을 지닌 고품질의 레코드였음.)
A second reason is that original 7 inch United States pressings of early rock and roll/rockabilly/dop wop singles are easily reproduced and are susceptible to counterfeiting. Beginning in the early 1970 reproductions of classic doo wop and rockabilly singles emerged in the USA. The earliest Elvis Presley singles on the Sun label are typical examples of records that are often found to be ‘repros’. A repro is a bootleg record that closely mimics a valuable original. Unlike US singles, original UK singles are almost impossible to repro due to their wide groove format, serrated label edges and especially their cut out (usually) trianglular centres. All the 45s in this set are genuine originals with the above features and stamped matrix numbers.
(초기의 1950년대 미국 음반은 가끔 위조되곤했으나 영국에서 제작된 레코드는 거의 위조가 불가능하다.)

Why these 1950s 7 inch vinyl singles are rare and valuable.

Although most of these songs on these records were quite big hits and sold in significant numbers, the fact is that the vast majority of those sales (especially before 1958) were not on the 7 inch vinyl format, but were on the more established 10 inch shellac 78 rpm (Standard Play) format. Vinyl 45s were a relatively new format at that time and the sales in this new format were modest in comparison to sales in the established 78 rpm format.
(1950년대 노래들은 7인치보다는 대부분 10인치로 판매되었기 때문에 7인치 레코드는 희귀하다.)
Secondly, it is very difficult to find original 1950s singles of rock and roll music in high grade condition. Generally, these records are found in lower grade condition (Poor to VG+) and it is uncommon to find them in EX- condition or better. This selection contains many items which are in exceptionally high condition and it is unlikely that too many of these original records genuinely in such high condition actually still exist.
(이 레코드들은 대부분 특히 희귀한데, 이는  세계 어느 곳에서 발견할 수 있는 음반 중 최상의 품질 등급에 가깝기 때문이다.)
